Application period

Application for the Biology Track and the Engineering Track will be open from 01 February 2010 until 10 April 2010, 14:00 central European time. Applicants who are short listed will be invited to attend the final admission assessment in Berlin which will be held from  07-09 June 2010. Projects will start in October 2010.

Please read the abstracts of the projects (available during the application period) carefully to select your three favourite projects. In order to acces the application form you need to register first (only possible during the applcation period).

Application for the Clinical Scientist Track will be announced separatley. 

Application Procedure

Please apply only online and read these instructions carefully before you apply. If you have any questions regarding the requirements or the application procedure please do not hesitate to contact the coordinator. This will avoid your application being rejected simply because you did not follow the required procedure. Here you can also download the application procedure as a PDF document.

Requirements for the admission to the PhD program

  • Biological Track     Applicants must hold a Master's, a German Diploma or an equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, bioengineering or veterinary medicine. Applicants with a Masters degree from a "Fachhochschule" should have a grade below 1.5. It is not necessary to hold the degree at the time of application. However, you must have obtained your degree before enrolment in October 2010.

    A Dr. rer. nat. will be awarded from the Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität, Technische Universität or Universität Potsdam. A Dr. vet med (veterinary medicine) will be awarded from the Freie Universität.

    Candidates who are accepted to the BSRT are not automatically matriculated and admitted to do a doctoral degree at Berlin or Potsdam's Universities. This requires a further administrative process .
  • Engineering Track   Applicants must hold a Master's, a German Diploma or an equivalent degree in physics, chemistry, or engineering. Applicants with a Masters degree from a "Fachhochschule" should have a grade below 1.5. It is not necessary to hold the degree at the time of application. However, you must have obtained your degree before enrolment in October 2010.

    A Dr. Ing. will be awarded by the Technische Universität. A Dr. rer. nat. will be awarded from the Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität, Technische Universität or Universität Potsdam.  

    Candidates who are accepted to the BSRT are not automatically matriculated and admitted to do a doctoral degree at Berlin or Potsdam's Universities. This requires a further administrative process .
  • Clinical Scientists   Applicants must have an MD, a German Dr. med. or equivalent degree in medicine. They should already have a position training as a medical or surgical specialist (the German Facharztausbildung). We may also help finding such a position at the Charité.

    There is currently no option at Berlin or Potsdam's Universities to award medics a PhD.

    The official language of the educational program is English, but participants of the clinical scientist track must be fluent in both spoken and written German in order to communicate effectively with patients when they work in the hospital.
