For young scientists at the BSRT

Travel grants to present at international conferences

Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers of the BSRT are encouraged to attend international conferences dealing with regenerative therapies. The BSRT can offer travel grants to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers of the BSRT. A short application with the reasons of why this conference is important has to be submitted to the BSRT coordination office. Please use the form provided for application for a BSRT travel grant which can be accessed after login and can be found in the download area of the BSRT website. The application should also include the submitted abstract and an estimate of the entire costs. Travel grant holders are obliged to travel economically. It must be also mentioned if other travel grants are available for this conference and if the applicant will also submit an application to the other funding body.

Travel grants are granted depending on the quality of the abstract, merit, and relevance of the conference. Travel grants can only be given if money is available in the BSRT budget. The BSRT will pay a maximum of € 1000 for conferences overseas and a maximum of € 500 for conferences within Europe. Doctoral or postdoctoral researchers who have not yet received a travel grant will receive funding in prevalence to those who already received funding. Travel Grants to German National Meetings will not be supported. Within four weeks of returning from the conference doctoral or postdoctoral researchers, who received a BSRT travel grant, will have to give a presentation summarizing the conference. This presentation can be organised within the own research group. However, it must be open to all members of the BSRT and shall be announced through the BSRT coordination office at least three days in advance.

There will be four submission deadlines per year:
31 January  ⋅  30 April  ⋅  31 July  ⋅  31 October

  • The completed application form. It can be accessed after login and can be found in the download area.
  • The submitted conference abstract.
  • The BSRT supervision agreement if it has not yet been submitted to the BSRT coordination office.
  • A copy of the "Zulassung zur Promotion" if it has not yet been submitted to the BSRT coordination office.
  • The minutes and progress reports of the mentoring committee meetings if they have not yet been submitted to the BSRT coordination office.

Allowance for lab exchanges

Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers of at the BSRT are encouraged go on a lab exchange with international partner institutes to learn new approaches which will help them to progress in their research work. The BSRT can support doctoral and postdoctoral researchers of the BSRT by paying an allowance for the first three months for their trip abroad. The allowance is in accordance with the DFG guidelines (please click her for further details).

An application with the detailed description of the research that will be conducted during the lab exchange and the reasons why this lab exchange is important for the progress of the own research project has to be submitted to the BSRT coordination office. Please use the form provided for application for a lab exchanges which can be accessed after login and can be found in the download area of the BSRT website. The application must also mention if other grants are available for this lab exchange and if the applicant will also submit an application to the other funding bodies. The allowance for the lab exchange is granted depending on the quality of the proposed research and the justification for the lab exchange. The allowance for a lab exchanges can only be given once to each doctoral or postdoctoral researcher. Up to four young scientists can be funded per year. Lab exchanges to labs in Germany will not be supported.

Within four weeks of returning from the lab exchange, the doctoral or postdoctoral researcher, who received an allowance, will have to give a presentation summarizing their research conducted at the international partner lab. This presentation can be organised within their own research group, but it must be open to all members of the BSRT and must be announced through the BSRT coordination office at least three days in advance.

  • The invitation of the partner laboratory where the lab exchange will take place.

  • The minutes and progress report of the mentoring committee meeting if they have not yet been submitted to the BSRT coordination office.

Funding for joint student research assistant

Doctoral students of the BSRT are encouraged to set up collaborations with other doctoral students of the BSRT with the aim to develop joint research projects. The BSRT can offer funding for a joint student research assistant who can help the doctoral students in the lab.

An application not exceeding five pages with the detailed description of the planned joint research project and the reasons why a student research assistant is required has to be submitted to the BSRT coordination office. Please use the form provided for application for a joint student research assistant which can be accessed after login and can be found in the download area of the BSRT website. The funding of a joint student research assistant is granted depending on the quality of the proposed research and the justification for the necessity to have extra help in the lab. Funding for a student research assistant is available for up to six month. An extension for further six month can be granted for a successful renewal proposal of this joint research project. Funding for joint student research assistants can only be given if money is available in the BSRT budget.

The BSRT students, who received this funding, will have to give a presentation summarizing their research project. This presentation can be organised within their own research group, but it must be open to all members of the BSRT and must be announced through the BSRT coordination office at least three days in advance.

Funding of stipend for completion of doctoral thesis

The BSRT can support doctoral researchers who have to interrupt their doctoral project in case of pregnancy, parental leave or due to some exceptional circumstance such as a long period of illness or the need for extended care of a family member which results in their project taking longer to complete. The BSRT can provide funding of a stipend of 1000€ per month for a period of up to 12 month for the doctoral student to complete their thesis.

An application with the detailed description of the progress of the doctoral research, a detailed schedule with the work packages that need to be done to finish the thesis and an explanation why the project could not be finished in time has to be submitted to the BSRT coordination office. Please use the form provided for application for a “stipend for completion of the doctoral thesis” which can be accessed after login and can be found in the download area of the BSRT website. The application must also mention if other grants are available and if the applicant will also submit an application to the other funding bodies. The fellowship is granted depending on the quality of the proposed research and the justification for the delay in finishing the doctoral project.
