Requirements for the admission to the Biology trackApplicants must hold a Master's, a German Diploma or an equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, bioengineering or veterinary medicine. Applicants with a Masters degree from a "Fachhochschule" should have a grade below 1.5. It is not necessary to hold the degree at the time of application. However, you must have obtained your degree before enrolment in January 2010.
A Dr. rer. nat. will be awarded from the Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität, Technische Universität or Universität Potsdam. A Dr. vet med (veterinary medicine) will bebe awarded from the Freie Universität
Stem Cell Biology and Signalling Cascades The BSRT research network wants to unravel parts the molecular signaling cascades that control stem or progenitor cell differentiation. Regeneration of tissues and organs depends on the recruitment, proliferation, and differentiation of stem or progenitor cells which reside in or migrate into the injured tissue and damaged cells. They must be replaced by new cells that are able to differentiate and to restore the organ’s previous function. Failed regulation of this process may lead to over-representation of certain cell types, as seen in fibrosis or vasculopathy, or in insufficient development of new tissue, as in non-healing fracture or chronic cartilage destruction. The molecular signaling cascades that control stem or progenitor cell differentiation are therefore of great scientific interest as they may open new approaches for treatment. However, little is known about the regulatory cascades and tissue regeneration is currently manipulated empirically without knowledge of the molecular interior.
